The Accurate Fishing Products Nilsen family is in Kona, Hawaii testing reels and enjoying the wonderful Kona style fishing.
The Nilsens fished with Captain Kent Mongreig aboard his 32 ft. Egg Harbor sportfisher, " Fish Wish". Douglas, Debbie, Carolyn and Jack Nilsen were aboard for this trip that included catches of thresher shark, ono, amberjack and skip jack tuna.
Carolyn Nilsen landed a 30 pound ono ( wahoo ) with coaching from her family and Captain Kent. This was the first ono for Carolyn, and she did an excellent job using an Accurate ATD50W.
Debbie Nilsen subdued an estimated 350-pound thresher shark using an Accurate ATD50W. The big thresher bit on a deep trolled skipjack. The battle was intense, lasting 1/2 hour. Debbie Nilsen has previous experience on big fish in Kona and the experience paid off on this "Bull of the Sea" Thresher shark.
Eric Miller, a family friend, landed an estimated 40 pound amberjack. Another amberjack was also boated and released by Carolyn Nilsen. Carolyn's fish was estimated at 50 pounds.
Captain Kent Mongreig offers all types of fishing in Kona. Kent is very unique in his focus on family and children friendly accommodations on the Fish Wish. The Fish Wish is a 32 foot Egg Harbor that is equipped with a children size adjustable fish fighting chair and custom small children's fish fighting harnesses. Captain Kent is very careful to explain to children that they will be safe during the fish battle, and what to expect. Carolyn Nilsen, who is age 8, received a thorough lesson in using the reel, rod, fighting chair, and safety precautions. Kent put her completely at ease and instilled in her the confidence that she needed. Carolyn knew that Captain Kent would be there to give here any help that she might need. Congratulations Carolyn! You did great on two great game fish; an ono and amberjack.
