La Paz Fishing Report
10th - 24th March 2024
This past week blessed us with fantastic weather, mostly sunny skies, and mild temperatures—early mornings in the 60s and midday in the mid-70s. The winds were gentle until the weekend when they picked up a bit. Water temperatures hovered in the low to mid-70s, water still a bit green, pretty normal for this time of the year.
The local surface bite was on fire this week, with no need to venture far as the fish were biting nearby. We encountered some hefty yellowtail, weighing in at 25-35 pounds, with multiple catches per boat on most days. A few anglers, having already stocked their freezers with yellowtail, opted to explore the shallows for other species. To their delight, they found roosterfish in big numbers—no giants yet, but plenty of mid-sized roosters.
While there were some dorado in the area, the yellowtail action was so enticing that it became our main focus. Looking ahead to next week, we’re expecting a couple of windy days, but it seems the heavy northerly winds are behind us. It’s one of the busiest weeks here in Mexico, with Mexican spring break in full swing, so it’ll be interesting to see how the bite holds up.
For those willing to venture further, there are plenty of yellowtail to be found at spots further north. This is an ideal time to fish the islands north of La Paz—few people, abundant fish, and breathtaking sights. Our liveaboard trips aboard our 41′ Riviera take this fishery to the next level. The basic package includes 3 full days of fishing and 4 nights’ accommodation for up to 4 anglers, all for a total cost of $6,500, or $1,625 per person. It’s an adventure not to be missed, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
