THE GAVIOTA SPORTFISHING FLEET AND FISH CABO FLEET

The dorado counts again leading the Cabo action, albeit, the counts have fallen off this past week. Nevertheless, the feisty and tasty critters were available for those that focused on them as reflected by the Gaviota IV, with limits of dorado (24) for 3 fishing days. Billfish counts were much slower this week and high boat for the week was the Gaviota 11, reflecting 5 stripers released for 4 days fished. Overall counts reflected about a 59% chance for catching a billfish as the boats reported in for 37 days with 22 stripers released, 4 wahoo, 15 yellowfin tuna, 13 sierra and 78 dorado.

Cabo Climate: Partly cloudy days with a good sunshine mix and temps that ranged from 59 nights to 80 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: A 2 degree temp difference from the Golden Gate Bank on the Pacific side to the Gordo Banks on the Sea of Cortez side, with the warmer waters on the Pacific. Very fishable on both sides and good clarity, too.

Best Fishing Area: The billfish were mostly in the areas close to Cabo, from Cristobal to Cabo Falso. About a third of the dorado and the yellowffin tuna came from the Jaime Bank.

Best Lure/Bait: Billfish were taken on the drift with live bait, slow trolled live bait and live bait drop-back on fish following the aritificials, so live bait was very important. Dorado and tuna taken on smaller lures and feathers and live bait dropped back after the initial strike on dorado.

Live Bait Supply: Remained very good but nearly all caballitos.
