SFR Blog: Stories from the first day of the Fred Hall Show

Great stories, great crowds for the first day of the Fred Hall Show, with most of the folks showing during the afternoon and old friends and new coming by at a steady pace all day.
One reunion revealed a touching story of how fishing and the internet can literally bring families together. On his first trip to Alijos Rocks years ago, SportfishingReport.com founder Chad Woods hit it off with another angler named Roland and they got together for more trips down the line. About a year or so ago, Chad got a call from a young man who said a Google search for the father he had not seen since he was seven had turned up his dad's name on a story about a charter trip on the SFR site. Chad said, I know who that is and I have his phone number. Time passed and here we all were at the show today. Roland was the father and he said that not only had he gotten the call from his son, but that they had reconciled and were spending a lot of time together, including fishing.
Another such run in brought back some great Fred Hall memories. Just a month or so ago I went to the memorial service for the brother of a good friend. At the reception afterwards we sat to eat next to one of the cousins and started talking and he id'd the old photos for us. Then I ran into him just a while ago by the Fisherman's Landing booth. Turns out he's a big fisherman and has been following the sport for years and is on SportfishingReport.com every night.
His name's Bert Vigil and he was at the show with his buddy Jason. Bert had the good fortune to grow up fishing with a Fred Hall Show icon, Del Marsh. "Yeah I got to fish Variety Beach with Del and the guys before anyone was going down there," he said. "I've got a picture with me dragging two 50-pound white seabass up the beach. We we would load up on fresh dead squid in San Pedro, fill up the ice chests in San Diego and head on down. We would fish 60 pound test on 540s with Jigmasters and just get pulled down the beach.
"I remember when Del would get home from a long range trip and we'd all help cut up fish in his garage and give it out to the folks in the community," Vigil added. "There were fish everywhere."
And every time I turn the corner at the Fred Hall Show I expect to see Del Marsh and get shown a well worn photo of giant barred perch and hear a joke maybe as old or maybe new, but always funny just because the man who told it made you want to enjoy life as much as he did.
