Qualifier 105 returned to Pt. Loma Sportfishing under Joe Crisci's hand September 10 after a seven-day trip that produced a load of yellowtail and an unprecedented catch of tan grouper, along with numerous small tuna. Gary Schall was the chartermaster on the trip, and all three of the jackpot winners were from the Long Beach Fire Dept. "We had wide-open yellowtail fishing on The Ridge," commented Crisci. "I've never seen so many grouper in one place. We drove away and left 'em biting."

Tom Crewse won first place for a 42.2-pound yellowtail. He said he bagged it with a sardine on a 3/0 Mustad 94150 hook and 30-pound fluorocarbon. He fished with 40-pound unknown mainline and 100-pound spectra on a Penn 300 reel and a Super Seeker 6465 rod.

Richard Bierman of the LBFD won second place for a 39-pound yellowtail. Darrell Strickroth of the LBFD took third place for a 49.6-pound tan grouper.
