The management plan for Isla Espiritu Santo near La Paz requires balancing protections for the marine environment with the sustainable use of the fisheries resource. The new management plan documents continuing declines in fisheries, due primarily to the ongoing use of gill nets on the inshore reefs, yet the plan allows those same gill nets to remain on the inshore reefs around the island! As a result, this plan guarantees further fisheries degradation and will do further damage to the recreation and tourism economy of La Paz.
