The offshore water temperatures have remained fairly stable for the past couple of weeks and holding well at about 71-72 degrees, which seems to be working very well for the billfish. For the first time in more than a month, the fleet reported a sailfish was landed and that is a good indication of an early spring-summer fishery for this area. The inshore waters remain coolish, in the mid-60's, but so far, it has provided some very good mixed bag catches for the anglers and this week reflected a 9 specie variety for the super pangas. The overall catches for the offshore waters for 10 days fished reflected a 90% billfish catch rate that included 8 stripers, (4 released) and 1 sailfish., reflecing a 90% billfish catch rate. The inshore super pangas, reporting in for 6 days fished reflected 1 striper, 1 corvina, 3 barracuda, 5 trigger fish, 17 sand bass, 8 sea bass, 10 red snapper, 31 perch and 9 white snappers. All in all, it was a good fishing week and for the most part, the fish cooperated for the anglers.
Mazatlan Climate: Partly cloudy but warm days and cool nights with temps from 52 nights to 83 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Overall, it was a pretty good water-weather week for Mazatlan with mostly light & variable surface breezes and stable offshore temps that held fast at 71-72 degrees and clean green waters. The inshore waters were murky green and very off colored with temps at about 66-67 degrees.
Best Fishing Area: The better fishing began at the 20 miles mark where the temp break changed from cooler to warmer waters on the outbound side.
Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits were the prime ticket for the billfish this past week.
Bait Supply: There was no noticeable problem with the bait supply that remained very good through the full moon phase.
