The reservoir is 39% full. The Main and Island Resort boat ramps are closed due to extremely low water levels. Hand launching non-motorized water crafts from shore is possible, but can be challenging in areas due to shallow conditions. Hand launching may also require anglers to walk some distance to reach the water, particularly north of the Island Resort and in the Wallsburg arm. Deer Creek State Park asks anglers to launch and use the reservoir at your own risk. Trout fishing is good to great. Several shore anglers report high rainbow trout catch rates using worms and trout dough bait. Kayak and float tube anglers have also been catching rainbow trout actively casting and/or drift-trolling spoons, swimbaits, crankbaits, tube jigs, baitfish mimic streamer patterns and balanced leech fly patterns. Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and walleye fishing is fair to good for anglers finesse fishing soft plastic worms, or actively working spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, crankbaits or lipless crankbaits. Topwater lures (such as walkers, propeller lures, or poppers) and streamer flies (such as frogs, cork poppers or mouse patterns) can be very effective for bass in October.
