Fishing forecast (December through March): The reservoir was drawn low during the summer and trout survival was likely impacted. Winter access is not maintained to Tropic Reservoir, so you may need a snowmobile or ATV to get there if the snow is too deep. Safe ice usually forms between early and late December and lasts until late March or early April, about the same time that access opens up. Use caution: Be aware of best practices for ice safety. Ice fishing pressure is light, so you can often have the reservoir to yourself if you can get there. In addition to stocked rainbow and tiger trout, there are also some large brown trout present that can be targeted through the ice.
