THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

It was just a dynamite, fabulously fun fishing week at Zihuatanejo, with a bonanza billfish bite for both, marlin and sailfish. Blues, blacks, stripers and sailfish were all available and all were biting according to Captain Temo Verboonen. The Lad Shunneson charter party of two anglers,, (Denver, CO) fishing aboard the "BLOODY HOOK", with Captain Chiro Barrigan, landed the biggest fish for the week, a 700 lb. black marlin, (outdoing Mr. Shunneson's year before 518-pounder) and another member of the group had a 325 lb. black marlin for the day. All in all, the day rounded out with 2 black marlin, 2 stripers and 1 sailfish, along with an assortment of jack cravelle, bonito and Sierra, with the Sierra and bonito being used for trolling baits. It was surely a fishing day to remember. On their 2nd fishing day aboard the "Bloody Hook", they landed 2 stripers and a silfish. According to Temo, the blue marlin are averaging above 200 lbs. and the stripers have been up to the 160 lb. mark. Captain Omero, aboard the "Duquesa", had a 350 lb. blue marlin. The birds and bait are back and the area is alive with lots of big jack cravelle and even a few roosterfish mixed in with the schools of jack cravelle.

IZ Climate: Mostly sunny and warm days with temps from 69 nights to 91 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Near perfect with clear blue water at about 7-8 miles outside the bay and temps from 80 inshore to 81 offshore.

Best Fishing Area: A huge area that started at about 10 miles and spanned outward bound to 25-plus miles, with fish in all areas.

Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits for the sailfish, bonito and Sierra for the black and blue marlin and live mackerel in the downriggers for stripers and sails. Inshore, the Rangers, red/white colors and the pencil poppers, also red/white colors, along with live bait and even the deep running rapalas were doing very well.
Bait Supply: Excellent bait supply in all categories.
