THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

I just got off the telephone with Captain Temo Verboonen, having just returned from his fly fishing charter today, and reporting that he had a terrific day with a sailfish and a striper on the fly. However, he shared with me that while the fishing was so much better today, it had been quite slow for the past week to 10 days or so and the skippers' had been working very hard to find fish for their anglers. Adding to the slow fishing had been the lack of charters, too. He said the yellowfin tuna had been moving back & forth, inside and outside the 30 mile mark. The average weight for the marlin has been right at 200 lbs. or so and about 60 lbs. for the sailfish. The inshore fishing was just so-so, too, as the jack cravelle and bonito seemed to have too much feed in the area and were stuffed full of sardinas and not at all eager to bite the artificials.

IZ Climate: Partly cloudy but warm days with temps from 68 nights to 91 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Much improved over the past couple of days with good, clean water just past 14 miles and excellent water temps that ranged from 82 inshore to 84-85 offshore. Calm ocean and very little tropical breeze.

Best Lure/Bait: Green/White streamers for the flyfishing enthusiats. Rigged trolling baits for regular daily billfish action.
Bait Supply: Continues to be readily available for this area.
