Our on-the-spot reporter at the Marina El Cid, Puerto Morelos, Ms. Nayade Gamboa, reported another wide-spectrum mixed bag catch of 14 varied species for the past week, (a near 7 fish average for each boat fished day) that reflected an increase in the dorado counts from the past couple of weeks. Also typical of the January time frame was the excellent bite for grouper which turned out to be the fish of the week. The overall fish counts for 27 days on the water reflected 46 grouper, 11 dorado, 10 king mackerel, 2 wahoo, 17 Spanish mackerel, 4 blackfin tuna, 27 bonito, 3 giant Atlantic barracuda, 5 amberjack, 6 strawberry fish, 23 banana fish, 6 soap fish, 14 triggerfish and 13 snappers.
PM Climate: Coolish evenings and warm days with temps that ranged from 62 nights to 84 daytime highs and under mostly cloudy conditions.
Sea Conditions: Remained very good for the most part with light & variable easterly surface breezes and sea temps that held stable at 80 degrees, along with near perfect clarity conditions.
Best Bait/Lure: The ballyhoo continues to be the bait of choice for this area and has not changed since the first day we started booking charters for this area.
Bait Supply: There has always been an excellent supply of freshly caught ballyhoo available for this area, which continues to be the bait of choice for all of the sportfishers.
