It was another great fishing week from Puerto Morelos that allowed for a near 90% billfish catch rate for the Martina El Cid Fleet. It seems like all the anglers fishing the 6-8-hour charters were having opportunities for the billfish while the shorter trips were in the 50-50 range. The water weather had improved this past week and there were no port closures to hamper the fishing effort, albeit, the numbers of charter have decreased a bit for this area. According to our area reporter, Ms. Nayade Gamboa, the boats fished a total of 17 trips that resulted in a 10 fish mixed bag catch that included 1 blue marlin, 14 sailfish, 6 dorado, 3 blackfin tuna, 2 giant barracuda, 1 wahoo, 15 bonito, 1 Spanish mackerel, 9 triggerfish and 3 snapper.
PM Climate: mostly cloudy days this past week with a slight chance for an occasional shower and temps that varied from 77 nights to 86 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Light & variable surface breezes to 13 mph, flowing mostly from the easterly directions. Sea temps holding stable at 83 degrees throughout the area.
Best Bait: The bait of choice continues to be the freshly caught daily provision of ballyhoo that is prepared in a variety of methods, depending on the species of fish being targeted.
