High billfish boat for the week was the "Tuna Time", skippered by Captain Roberto Marquez, landing 3 stripers and 3 dorado for the Christopher Gaggero charter party, Carpinteria, CA, on a 1-day fishing charter. Overall, the fishing results for the week had been pretty slow for the bulk of the sportfishers but this fine group of young men were all looking for their first billfish and 3 of the 4 were successful. The overall combined fish counts for the fleets reflected only 5 stripers, (released) 3 sailfish, (released) 12 dorado, 17 yellowfin tuna and 16 skipjack tuna for a total of 19 days fished.
Cabo Climate: Mostly sunny & warm days with very pleasant evenings. Temps ranged from 76 nights to 91 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: On the Pacific side, from the Golden Gate Bank and down to the Jaime Bank, holding at 81 degrees. Still a cold up-welling along the beach, from a few miles above Cristobal and down to Cabo Falso and extending out 6-8 miles or so, reflecting 74-75 degrees. Cabo San Lucas to Palmilla Point, temps at 81 and from San Jose to Las Frailes rising to 83-87 degrees. Surface breezes flowing mostly from the southeast at calm to 10 mph.
Best Fishing Area: Just south of Cabo Falso Lighthouse, about 1 mile offshore at the drop-off.
Best Bait/Lure: According to Captain Marquez, 1 billfish was taken on a live bait and two were taken on rigged trolling baits.
Live bait supply: Excellent live bait supply at the rate of $3.00 per bait.
