Northern Region Aquatics Manager Paul Thompson had a great time fishing Mantua over the weekend. He says bluegill have started to move into the shallow waters at in preparation to spawn. This is a great time to fish for bluegill and get kids out to catch some fish as bluegill become aggressive and easy to catch when spawning. Paul and a friend fished Sunday morning for a few hours and easily caught more than 100 bluegill from a boat. We sight fished them with fly rods and poppers — the color didn't matter. I was rewarded with a nice largemouth bass as well. While we chose to use fly rods, a worm under a bobber was working great for those fishing from shore. Fishing for bluegill should be good for the next two to three weeks. Try the west shoreline and shore anglers, try the knoll.
