Stampede Reservoir - Truckee, CA

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Kokanee Salmon, Smallmouth Bass, Lahontan Cutthroat
Stampede Reservoir, a substantial impoundment situated north of Truckee, California, stands as a cornerstone coldwater fishery within the Sierra Nevada. Jointly managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), this expansive reservoir supports exceptional populations of Kokanee Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), Brown Trout (Salmo trutta), and the highly coveted Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush, or Mackinaw). Stampede is particularly renowned for producing large Kokanee, often exceeding 18 inches.

Precision trolling with downriggers, employing dodger-flasher arrays coupled with mini-hoochies or small spoons, is the definitive methodology for targeting schooling Kokanee. Mackinaw, which frequently attain trophy dimensions, necessitate deep-water trolling with substantial spoons, plugs, or live bait (where authorized), often at depths exceeding 50 feet; vertical jigging over submerged structures also proves efficacious. Rainbow and Brown Trout are effectively pursued with conventional bait, casting lures, or fly fishing in shallower littoral zones. Optimal angling periods are species-dependent: Kokanee from late spring through late summer; Mackinaw year-round, with peak activity in cooler months. Comprehensive access is provided by multiple boat ramps and extensive recreational infrastructure. Anglers are unequivocally required to consult current CDFW regulations for species-specific bag limits, size restrictions, and gear mandates, which are rigorously enforced to conserve this vital fishery.
