Bullards Bar Reservoir - Dobbins, CA

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Largemouth Bass, Kokanee Salmon, Smallmouth Bass
Bullards Bar Reservoir is a steep, deep, and exceptionally clear Sierra foothill lake located near Dobbins, CA. This 4,800-acre reservoir is renowned for its world-class spotted bass fishery, with numerous fish over 8 pounds caught annually. These bass thrive in the deep, clear water and are most active from late fall through spring, when anglers target them with finesse rigs, swimbaits, and jigs near steep walls and submerged timber.

The lake also offers strong kokanee salmon fishing, particularly from May through July. Kokanee are smaller than in other lakes but plentiful, and are best caught trolling deep with hoochies and corn-tipped lures. Largemouth and smallmouth bass provide additional opportunities, particularly in shallower coves during spring and early summer.

Bullards Bar has minimal shoreline access due to its steep terrain, making boating essential. Launch ramps are located at Dark Day and Cottage Creek. The reservoir is remote and lightly developed, with limited amenities but excellent fishing for those equipped and prepared.

With its trophy-class spotted bass, seasonal kokanee runs, and scenic mountain backdrop, Bullards Bar is a prime destination for serious freshwater anglers looking for deep-water challenges and big-fish potential.

Despite its remoteness, the lake is well-managed and sees moderate fishing pressure. The clear water can make for challenging conditions, especially in summer when fish hold deep. Electronics and precise trolling or jigging techniques are key to success in deeper zones.
