Tuolumne River - CA

River Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
The Tuolumne River is a diverse and ecologically significant fishery stretching from Yosemite National Park to the San Joaquin Valley. It offers high-country trout fishing in its upper reaches and warmwater species downstream, making it one of California’s most varied river systems for anglers.

Above Hetch Hetchy, anglers find wild rainbow, brook, and brown trout in a remote alpine environment. These sections are best accessed via hiking trails and fished with dry flies and small nymphs during summer and early fall. Access is limited but rewards the experienced angler with solitude and pristine surroundings.

Below Don Pedro Reservoir, the river transitions into a tailwater system. Spring provides opportunities for stocked rainbow trout, while summer and fall are dominated by warmwater species including smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and catfish. Public access near La Grange and downstream of the dam allows for both shore and boat fishing.

Techniques range from fly fishing with nymphs and streamers to spin fishing with jigs and bait rigs, depending on section and season. Regulation awareness is important, as sections of the river fall under different rules and may have special designations.

The Tuolumne River remains a vital and versatile fishery offering opportunities for anglers across a wide range of skill levels and target species.
