THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

Captain Temo Verboonen reflected a very upbeat fish report for this past week and said the catching had "seriously turned around from the week before". The billfish bite was back into full swing with a few blue marlin, a few black marlin, (both in the 200-225 lb. ranges) good striper catches and an abundance off sailfish. Even the yellowfin tuna had moved back into the area and often popped-up in the 20 mile area, rounding out some of the daily catches with sashimi hors d'oeuvre possibilities. Even the inshore areas kicked in with fair catches of jack cravelle and good numbers of bonitos.

IZ Climate: Mostly cloudy days with intervals of sunshine and temps that ranged from 69 nights to 90 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Good blue water starts at about 15 miles out and from there on is the bite. Sea temps are very good and at 80 inshore and rising to 82 offshore, with mostly calm waters and light surface breezes.

Best Fishing Area: The offshore bite started at about 16-17 miles (just past the clean, bluewater break) and outbound from there.

Best Bait/Lure: Billfish in general were best on the rigged baits. The yellowfin were running with the porpoise and mostly liked the tuna feathers.
Bait Supply: Excellent throughout the area.
