It was another superb action fishing week from The Marina El Cid, in Mazatlan, with the boats reflecting multiple billfish catches for every trip. The "Aries I", skippered by Captain Jose Zamora and "Aries III", skippered by Captain Martin Raygoza, reflected two days with 5 sailfish each day. The overall catch reports for 15 days fished reflected 31 sailfish, (16 releases)2 dorado, (20 lb. fish) 2 sharks and 9 yellowfin tuna, (15-45 lb. fish). The super pangas, reporting in for 5 days fished, reflected 1 sailfish, 4 yellowfin tuna, 1 dorado, 3 roosterfish, (released) 20 triggerfish and 17 Sierra, (mostly in the 5-7 lb. range for the Sierra). Overall, this continues to be one of the best December fishing periods for several years and there is no sign of the pending annual changes for this area, at least, not yet.
Mazatlan Climate: Cool mornings and evenings but warm and toasty days with temps ranging from 57 nights to 85 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Mostly a calm sea surface week with light & variable surface breezes from the westerly directions and excellent sea temps that continue to hold at 80-81 degrees. Clarity is crystal clear and deep blue throughout the offshore areas.
Best Fishing Area: Most of the billfish are coming from the area out to the southwest of the Marina El Cid starting at about 18-20 miles or so and working outbound from there.
Best Lure/Bait: The rigged mullet trolling baits have been the bait of choice for the sailfish and the few dorado and the tuna were taken on the feathers.
Bait Supply: A ready supply of bait, both for rigging and live bait, continues to be available for the sportfishers on a daily basis and without interruption.
