Predicting the future fishing results is at best a 50-50 chance of being right. During the past few weeks, I have predicted the distinct possibilities for black & blue marlin, based on the good showing of dorado and yellowfin tuna, the preferred food for these big fish. Seems like when I'm in the predicting mood it's always on the wrong side of the 50-50 chance and this surely applies to the past few weeks, too. Usually, coming into a full moon phase, the black & blue marlin are eager biters but for whatever reason, they haven't shown up for the action. Worse, this past week was the first time in many months that we have been absent any billfish and even the sailfish got lock jawed. Sure hard to figure out this fishing business, especially when all of the elements are in perfect order, water temp is perfect, clarity is very good, feed supply is abundant, weather is good. Guess I can blame it all on "El Nino", for whatever that's worth? The offshore fishing results for 9 days fished reflected 13 yellowfin tuna, (school sized fish in the 20-25 lb. ranges) and 49 dorado, (5 releases). The inshore super pangas reporting in for 7 days fished reflected 25 dorado, (3 releases), with most of the fish taken at the buoys.


Mazatlan Climate: Mostly cloudy days with a chance for scattered showers and temperatures that ranged from 73 nights to 92 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: The inshore-offshore sea temps stable at 87-88 degrees. Surface breezes flowing mostly from the southerly directions from calm to 15 mph.

Best Fishing Area: The yellowfin tuna came from a pod of porpoise in an offshore area at about 22 miles southerly from the Marina El Cid. Most of the dorado were taken near the offshore buoys.

Best Bait/Lure: Feathers worked well for the tuna and even for some of the dorado. The smaller diving type of artificials, (Rapalas) were producing well for the dorado, too.

Bait Supply: The fresh caught baits for rigging were readily available as was the live bait supply, still at the rate of $1.00 per bait.
