The first fishing report for 2015, reflects a better than 50% billfish catch average for the sportfishers from the Aries Sportfishing Fleet, operating from the Marina El Cid, Pacific, in Mazatlan. So far, it appears that the full moon had little to do with the fishing results or the bait supply for the area and about the only challenge was a single port closure day due to high winds and rough sea conditions for Saturday, January 3, 2015. The inshore super panga catches have been excellent over the past couple of weeks and should continue to be very good with continued water temperature stability. The overall catches for 19 offshore fishing days reflected 3 stripers, 7 sailfish, (3 released) and 13 yellowfin tuna, (15-30 lb. fish) and the inshore super pangas reported in for 5 days fished that reflected 3 corvina, 1 jack crevalle, 5 triggerfish and 64 red snappers.

Mazatlan Climate: Partly cloudy to sunny and warm days were the norm for the past week. Mornings and evenings were cooler and light jackets were in order. Temps ranged from 56 nights to 85 daytime highs and a 57% humidity level.

Sea Conditions: Surface breezes flowing mostly from the northwesterly directions that ranged from nearly calm to 9 mph, just enough to keep the fish interested in the baits. Sea temps ranged from 74 inshore to 76 offshore with the break at about 18 miles.

Best Fishing Area: The better action was beyond the 18-mile mark, out to the south & southwest of the Marina El Cid.

Best Lure/Bait: Freshly rigged trolling baits working well for the billfish. The yellowfin tuna preferring the feathers.

Bait Supply: The bait supply remained unaffected by the full moon phase and fresh rigging baits were provided as part of the charter. Live baits are $1.00 per bait.

According to Captain Roberto Marquez, the tailers weren't being cooperative in the area around Pozo de Cota but plenty of them all cruising downhill toward Cabo. Closer to Cabo, between the arch and Cabo Falso, the feeders were popping up...... Read More
