THE CABO SAN LUCAS FISHING REPORT FOR THE GAVIOTA SPORTFISHING FLEET AND FISH CABO FLEET
According to Captain Roberto Marquez, there are many, many billfish right out front of Cabo San Lucas, starting at about two miles or so, from the Cabo Arch to Cabo Falso, but the fish are not being overly cooperative and declined live baits, rigged baits, artificials and even downsizing to light line and smaller hook sizes. Roberto said it was truly frustrating for several days of seeing lots of billfish and not being able to catch much at all for the anglers. "We baited fish all day long for most of the days, so the anglers got to see the fish and at least knew we were trying. In conjunction with the many baitings was a daily good sighting of the gray whales that always has excitement for the passengers. "We did wind up with a 1 fish per day average at the end of the report period and considering the stubbornness of the bite, I should be happy. However, when you see spots of 4-6-8-10 fish tailing down swell, and over and again make perfect live bait presentations only to watch the fish sink out, it's hard to be content with a single fish per day average". High boat for the week was the "Gaviota VII", reporting 6 stripers and 2 dorado for 6 days fished and followed by the "Tuna Time", with 4 stripers and a single mako shark for 3 days fished. The overall fish counts for a total of 33 days fished reflected 18 stripers, (16 released) 1 mako shark, 5 jack crevalle, 5 dorado, 4 roosterfish, 21 skipjack and 77 Sierras.
Cabo Climate: Air temps ranged from 72 nights to 93 daytime highs and a 42% average humidity level. It was a partly cloudy week with substantial intermittent sunshine periods.
Sea Conditions: Surface breezes flowing in mostly rom the westerly directions from almost calm mornings to 21 mph in the afternoons. The Pacific side, on a line from Northwest to southeast, from Golden Gate Bank, down across the Jaime Bank and beyound, all at 74-75 degrees from the shoreline to 12-13 miles offshore. Cabo Falso, around to Los Frailes, all at 77 to 79 degrees. Overall, very good sea conditions and just enough surface ripple to keep the fish more active.
Best Fishing Area: No specific area was best as there were billfish from a couple miles outside the arch to Cabo Falso and they were all being finicky and not being cooperative with exception to rare exceptions..
Best Bait/Lure: Nothing was working very well and a lot of tricks were being tried.
Live Bait Supply: A good supply of live caballitos at the $3.00 per bait rate.
