THE PUERTO MORELOS SPORTFISHING REPORT FOR THE MARINA EL CID SPORTFISHING FLEET, (CANCUN TO COZUMEL AREA - CARIBBEAN)
Another season's first was taken this past week from the Marina El Cid Sportfishing Fleet in Puerto Morelos. The 35' Bertram sportfisher, "Double Trouble", reported in with the first blue marlin for the year that ties right in with the first white marlin for the season taken the previous week. Also, this past week was an influx of sailfish in the report, reflecting a total of 10 sailfish. The dorado counts remained high, too, and the overall spring fishing & catching is in full swing for the area. The fleet reflected 78 days fished and a fish count that included 1 blue marlin 10 sailfish, 58 dorado, 12 giant barracuda, 31 bonito, 6 wahoo, 2 blackfin tuna, 68 chac-chi, 81 snapper, (the fish of the week) 39 triggerfish, 11 banana fish and 16 grouper. The sailfish have arrived on location a bit early and we should begin to see some higher counts along with the annual migration of the white marlin that typically provide the mainstay of action for May & June each year.
PM Climate: Air temps ranged from 72 nights to 86 daytime highs and a 70% humidity level average. A few clouds for the early part of the week, changing to full sunny days thru Saturday and then, cloudy again for Sunday.
Sea Conditions: Sea temps holding well at 81-82 degrees throughout the area. Tropical surface breezes flowing in from the easterly direction from near calm to 13 mph.
Best Bait: Freshly caught ballyhoo baits are provided as part of the charters and remains the area's most welcomed bait for rigging.
Bait Supply: Readily available ballyhoo are provided on a daily basis for all of the sportfishers and remain the bait of choice for the anglers and the crews.
