The striper action increased favorably this past week and it appears the fish may just begin a major bite before too long as they move around the corner and toward the Sea of Cortez areas for the first time since more than a year ago. Up to now, almost all of the billfish were holding on the Pacific side of the peninsula, ranging from the Finger Bank area and down to Cabo Falso and out to the 95 Fathom spot, all which are technically Pacific areas. However, the anglers and crews tend to feel that when they head easterly in the morning that they are fishing in the Sea of Cortez and the line is typically drawn when departing the harbor. It has always been that way and will probably never change. In any even, we are staring to see some much better billfish action just inside the 95 Fathom Spot, which is still very close to Cabo Harbor and allows for longer fishing days and more opportunities. High boat for the week was the Tuna Time, reporting in with 5 stripers released for 2 d;ays fished, that reflects a major change in the movement pattern for the Pacific striped marlin as the fish move around the corner. The overall fish counts for 24 days fishing reflected a total of 19 stripers, (yes, there were the have and have nots his past week, but for the most part, all had good opportunities) Releases were good at 17 and included 4 dorado, 1 mako shark, and 11 skipjack for their efforts.
Cabo Climate: There were partly cloudy days with intermittent sunshine and a fully sunny day on Saturday. Air temps varied from 62 nights to 86 daytime highs and an average humidity level at 34%.
Sea Conditions: Surface breezes flowing in from the westerly directions, (normal for this time of year) and ranged from light to about 21 mph, creating some rougher and bumpier Pacific side conditions and a cooler sea surface temp, falling to about 74 degrees from the Golden Gate Bank area to Cabo Falso. Rounding the corner and heading east toward the Sea of Cortez, the temps increase to 79 degrees all the way up to Los Frailes.
Best Fishing Area: The stripers were still tailing toward the Sea of Cortez and the better bite came from jus inside the 95 Fathom Spot.
Best Bait/Lure: Fish were taken on both but the live bait was producing the better bite on fish that were being spotted on the surface.
Live Bait Supply: Remains in excellent shape with plenty of live caballitos available at the $3.00 per bait rate.
