Still a good mix of fish coming in at Cabo San Lucas and an
interesting change in location for the striper action. While only
53% of the boats reflected stripers in their counts, most of the fish
were taken while drifting deep live baits at the Cabo Falso drop-
off. This type of fishing is normal in December but abnormal in
September/October. It's very difficult to explain to anglers that
have fished billfish before, either by trolling or live baiting a
visual fish, such as a tailer, sleeper or feeder. Anglers are just
not used to fishing marlin using an 8-10 oz. torpedo sinker, but the
method is very effective at certain times off the year. The overall
combined fish counts for 30 days fished reflected 29 yellowfin tuna,
("Gaviota VIII" had the largest that checked in at 120 lbs.) 16
stripers released, 3 wahoo and 95 dorado.
Cabo Climate: Partly cloudy days and nice temperatures that range
from 75 nights to 91 daytime highs, with humidity levels up for the
week.
Sea Conditions: A noticeable temp break occurs from Northwest to
Southeast at about 8 miles off the Pacific side where the temps are
at 85 offshore and 87-88 inshore. From Cabo San Lucas to Los
Frailes, temps are stable at 87-88 degrees. Good clarity and light
swell activity.
Best Fishing Area: The Cabo Falso drop-off has been the hot spot
this week, but a few billfish, dorado and yellowfin still taken at
the Golden Gate Bank and Jaime Bank.
Best Lure/bait: Drifted live baits at Cabo Falso were required,
using 8-10 oz. torpedo sinkers at various depths.
Live Bait Supply: Good supply for Caballitos.
