This past week was slow on the anglers and equally as slow on the billfish, albeit, one could reflect a 50-50 chance at a billfish if just the catch numbers were provided. We had a combined report for a total of 14 days fished that reflected a total of 7 billfish were landed. However, the high billfish boat for the week was the "Fish Cabo", reflecting 3 stripers and 3 sailfish, (all released) for their 4 days fished. This left a total of one striper landed aboard the "Gaviota IV" for their single fishing day, adding 2 dorado and 2 yellowfin tuna. The overall catch numbers for 14 days fished reflected 4 stripers, (all released) 3 sailfish (released) 2 wahoo, (both taken by the "Gaviota X") 24 skipjack and 38 dorado. When you look at fish report numbers only, the counts can possibly be unintentionally deceiving.
Cabo Climate: Air temps stable at 76 nights to 90 daytime highs and humidity level at 74%. NO WIND but rain is predicted at 80% chance from Friday thru Wednesday, (August 22-27) and the area should turn desert spectacular shortly after. This has been a mostly cloudy week with an occasional sunshine period.
Sea Conditions: Sea temps on the Pacific side, from the Finger Bank and southerly to Cabo Falso, all at 84-85 degrees. Cabo Falso to Las Frailes and into the Sea of Cortez, all at 86-87 degrees. Surface breezes flowing mostly from the southerly directions from calm to 9 mph, (light & variable).
Best Fishing Area: The better fishing & catching area continues to be just a couple miles out front of Cabo Falso, especially for the billfish. There are numerous smaller dorado throughout the area all along the Pacific side but they are very small fish, (2-4 lbs.) and for the most part are being released to grow bigger. Most of the boats are not even showing the fish in their reports even though they are releasing many of them everyday.
Best Bait/Lure: Live bait was best for the billfish.
Live Bait Supply: The live bait supply continues to be very good and continues to be at the $3.00 per bait rate.
