The billfish bite for the Aries Fleet out of the Marina El Cid was pretty decent this past week and about the only change was the diminished bite on dorado. Water temps, clarity and feed biomass remain readily available at the buoys but for some reason, the dorado took the week off and we will have to wait and see if it picks back up again. The overall fish counts for a total of 13 offshore fishing days reflected 10 sailfish, (4 released) 4 dorado and 8 yellowfin tuna while the inshore super pangas reported in for 5 days fishing that resulted in 1 dorado, 19 snappers and 39 jack crevalle, (mostly in the 10-12 lb. ranges).
Mazatlan Climate: A few partly cloudy and few sunny days with temps that ranged from 71 nights to 91 daytime highs and a 57% humidity rate.
Sea Conditions: Surface breezes flowing mostly from the westerly directions to 13 mph, providing just enough surface movement to make the sailfish want to bite. Temps ranged from 80-81 degrees inshore and came up to 84 degrees at about 10 miles offshore.
Best fishing area: Seemed like most of the sailfish were in the 17-14 mile range out to the southwest of the Marina El Cid.
Best Bait/Lure: Sailfish were best on the rigged baits and the yellowfin tuna were all taken on tuna feathers of assorted colors.
Bait Supply: Remained very good for both, fresh baits for rigging and live bait at $1.00 per bait.
