According to Captain Roberto Marquez, owner of the Fish Cabo Boats, there were plenty of striper strikes on the artificial lures, (they had 7 striper strikes for a single day) but most were blind strike "short biters" and hung on just enough to zip the reels and then disappear from the spread and not return. A little frustration for the anglers and the crew. Drop backs were not working and it appeared to be isolated single fish. However, they did get a couple that stuck to the hooks and allowed for legitimate releases. Additionally, Roberto talked about a number of very small wahoo being caught out in front of the Santa Maria Bay area, in the 4-6 lb. range. Very unusual. Wahoo are a fast growing fish, 20-30 lbs. in the first year, so I surmise these smaller fish were born in Cabo waters and recently, which is new news for me. Female wahoo can lay from 560,000 to 45 million eggs and they do so in spurts. World record is 158 lbs., taken in the Sea of Cortez and a 202-pounder was declined for recognition by IGFA in 2002, so they get pretty big. The overall combined fish counts for a total of 29 days fished reflected 18 stripers, 16 released, 4 sailfish released, 2 wahoo, 2 skipjack and 93 dorado.

Cabo Climate: Cool nights and warm days with temps that ranged from 60 to 86 degrees. It was mostly sunny & warm days with a few passing clouds and light tropical breezes.

Sea Conditions: Pacific side, from the Finger Bank & Todos Santos, southerly to Cabo San Lucas and into the Sea of Cortez, all at 81.5 degrees out to the 1000 fathom curve. Outside the 95 & 1150 Fathom spots and just outside the 1,000 fathm curve, temps rose to 82 degrees. Surface breezes ranged from calm to about 9 mph, flowing mostly from the easterly directions.

Best Fishing Area: Migrino on the Pacific side, 3-4 miles offshore for the billfish and the Herradura, just a few miles south of Cabo San Lucas.

Best Bait/Lure: Artificials were the hot ticket for the stripers in the Migrino area. Both, billfish and dorado were pretty eager on the lures.

Live Bait Supply: Excellent supply at the $3.00 per bait rate.
