The chances for catching a billfish this past week from Mazatlan was again favorable and about 65% for the angler. This continues the unusual billfish action for March and the past two weeks have reflected the best marlin catches we have ever reported for the month of March from Mazatlan. We just need it to continue right into the early summer fishing season, just around tthe corner, so to speak. The overall catches for 20 offshore fishing days resulted in 11 stripers, (3 released) 5 mako sharks, 2 sailfish, (1 released) and 6 yellowfin tuna, (all school fish sizes, 20-25 lbs.). The inshore fishing continues to be very slow and the super pangas reflected a single mako shark for their 3 fishing days.
Mazatlan Climate: The Port was closed on Tuesday due to rough weather with hard northerly surface winds and choppy sea conditions. A sun-cloud mix and getting sunnier as the week passed by with temps that ranged from 51 nights & mornings to 84 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Very good for the most part with the exception of the Port closure on Tuesday. Sea temps holding pretty good in the offshore waters and stable at 67-68 degrees. Cooler waters inshore and holding in the 62-63 degree ranges.
Best Bait/Lure: The hot lure has been orange/green colors for the billfish but the rigged baits have been working very well, too.
Best Fishing Area: Most of the billfish are coming from the 15-20 mile mark, straight out from the Marina El Cid.
Bait Supply: Remains excellent for both, live bait and fresh baits for rigging.
