It was a little bit slower on charters this past week from Puerto Morelos and for no apparent reason. The area is full of tourists but it appears most are pyramiding, beaching, sitting by the pool and even golfing. Just not too much on the fishing side, even though the fishing remains very good, which is typical for the month of May. May & June are wonderful fishing months in this area, especially for the billfish, (white marlin, sailfish and even blue marlin) and I would definitely recommend a minimum 6-hour charter from the Marina El Cid, especially if one's goal is to land a billfish. Also available at this time of year is an opportunity for a dorado, wahoo, blackfin tuna and more. This past week's catch report for a total of 22 days fished reflected 3 white marlin, 3 sailfish, 13 dorado, 7 blackfin tuna, 16 bonito, 4 giant barracuda, 4 wahoo, 2 Spanish mackerel, 1 pargo, 8 banana fish, 10 triggerfish and 6 grouper.
PM Climate: Mostly cloudy but warm days with intermittent sunshine and temperatures that ranged from 77 nights to 89 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Excellent water temperatures throughout the area and stable at 83 degrees. The tropical surface breezes continue to flow from the easterly directions and typically range from 10-20 mph, providing some afternoon wind chop that helps to keep the game fish active.
Best Bait/Lures: The freshly caught ballyhoo continues to be the bait of choice for this area and is provided fresh on a daily basis by the local bait catchers for the fleet.
