The billfish bite rebounded nicely this past week and the good fishing was pretty much all over, stretching from Cabo Falso to the Gorda Banks and beyond. High boat for the week was the Fish Cabo, reporting in for 6 billfish released for a single fishing day, (June 18, 2013) and followed by the Gaviota IX, reporting in for 5 billfish for 5 days fished. A 60 lb. dorado was landed aboard the Gaviota II by anglers Corey Lee & Johanna Giesler, both from Oregon. The fish was taken on a green & black artificial on 80 lb. monofilament and took them 20 minutes to get the fish to the boat. The overall fish counts for a combined total of 22 days fished reflected 28 stripers, (26 released) 8 dorado, 3 roosterfish, 1 hammerhead shark, 1 skipjack and 1 yellowfin tuna.
Cabo Climate: A few passing clouds but mostly clear, sunny and hot, with temps that ranged from 70 nights to 100 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: The Pacific side of Cabo remains cool waters at 68-70 with a temp break at San Cristobal, rising to 74-75 degrees. Temps rise again at Cabo San Lucas Bay to 80-82 and extends out to the 1000 fathom curve and on into the Sea of Cortez. These are huge changes from the water temperatures of the prior week as the current from the Sea of Cortez side pushed the cooler Pacific current back around the corner and allowed for an incredible up swing in the fishing. Surface breezes coming in from the SE from very little to 16 mph, depending on the day.
Best Fishing Area: There's a wide area of billfish from right out in front of Cabo and over to Cabo Falso and out in front of Chileno, out at the 1150 Fathom spot and on up to the Gorda Banks.
Best Bait/Lure: The billfish were pretty eager on both, the artificials and the live bait. The big dorado was taken on a green & black artificial.
Live Bait Supply: Remains excellent with mostly caballitos for bait at the $3.00 per bait rate.
