Just when we thought the billfish season was over from Puerto Morelos, a couple of sailfish jumped right back into the fish count that tallied a mixed bag catch of some 14 species. It seems like a little something new shows up in the fish counts every week and I find out how little I know about fish names and species. This week they reported a sergeant fish and that was a new one for me and I found it on the computer. Yep, it has stripes, just like a sergeant, so I guess the name is rather appropriate, albeit, it the first time we have seen it in the fish reports from this area. The overall fishing reflected bottom fishing to be the best bet for the anglers but the surface action did offer some good opportunities. The fish report reflected 2 sailfish, 17 bonito, 3 wahoo, 16 giant barracuda, 4 Spanish Mackerel, 2 blackfin tuna, & 1 king mackerel for the surface action and 75 triggerfish, 18 snappers, 20 grouper, 14 soap fish, 6 grunts, 2 strawberry fish and 1 sergeant fish.
PM Climate: Partly cloudy days through Wednesday and hard rain on Thursday, (2 inches in the forecast). Temps were warm and varied from 73 nights to 91 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Excellent through mid week and then came Thursday with rain, wind and rough sea conditions. Sea Temps holding up well at 83-84.
Best Bait: The ever present ballyhoo baits continue to be the bait of choice for the anglers and crews of the various fishing boats from Puerto Morelos. This particular bait continuously dominates the fishing methods for the entire area surrounding Puerto Morelos and hasn't changed over the years we have reported for this area.
