An interesting fishing week for the Cabo fleets that reflected surge in the dorado counts but still slowish on the billfish action and again, sailfish outnumbered the stripers. The "Gaviota I" & "Gaviota IX" both landed smaller blue marlin and a couple of sailfish for their efforts this past week and the "Fish Cabo" released 4 sailfish for their 4 days fished. The overall combined catches for a total of 27 days fished reflected 2 blue marlin, 5 stripers, (released) 7 sailfish, (released)1 mako shark, 1 wahoo, 2 skipjack tuna and 113 dorado, (a few of the dorado were in the 25-35 lb. ranges but most were in the 10-15 lb. range).

Cabo Climate: It's that time of the year when weather conditions can be truly unpredictable and you can get rain on almost any given day. This past week was surely no different, either, with rain early in the week, dry on Tuesday, scattered showers in the mountains on Wednesday, rain on Thursday & Friday and scattered showers for the weekend. Then, top it off with the effects of Hurricane Norbert, a category 2, (reduced to a category 1) event that will pass Cabo by 75 miles or so offshore and continue on in his NW movement and be gone from the area by Saturday night. That is, unless something makes Norbert change directions by just a few degrees that could bring it right over Cabo. However, Cabo has been lucky, not only with fishing, but has kept out of the path of the bigger hurricanes for many years and hopefully, the missing will continue. The air temps were a little cooler this past week and ranged from 76 nights to 88 daytime highs and the humidity level held close to 66%.

Sea Conditions: Looks like port closures for a couple of days to go with the effects of Norbert. Surface winds currently flowing from the southerly directions and ranged from calm to 25 mph. Big swells continue through the weekend, especially on the Pacific side, wrapping Cabo and around to San Jose Del Cabo. The Pacific side, from the Finger Bank to Cabo Falso is holding at 85-86 degrees and from Cabo San Lucas to Gorda Banks, 87-88 degrees.

Best Fishing Area: Interestingly, the sailfish came from the Gorda Banks area while most of the dorado came from the Pacific side, near Pozo de Cota area.

Best Bait/Lure: Billfish were actually taking the slow trolled dead-rigged baits better than live bait and the dorado were taking both.

Live Bait Supply: Plenty of live bait availability for now at the $3.00 per bait rate.
