Unfortunately, not to much to report from Cabo San Lucas for the past week, given the port closures that took 2 days out of the fishing week and a 3rd day with no people, leaving a 4-day period for reporting. Even for the 4 days available, only 6 boats got out. The fishing for those days seemed to be pretty good, at least for one of the boats, "Gaviota IV", reporting in for his 3 days fished with a total of 7 stripers released. The combined fish count for the 6 days fished reflected 7 stripers released and 1 sailfish released but even more interesting was the lack of dorado in the fish counts.
Cabo Climate: Cabo San Lucas just had Hurricane Norbert early last week that finally hit landfall in the upper Baja in the area nearSan Martin and Colnett with a sprinkle in Ensenada and the mountains and deserts of Southern Calif. I live just 10 miles east of San Diego central and we never had a drop and guess we were lucky to see a few clouds to shade the sun? Now, as we close out this week, a new category 2 hurricane has developed on Wednesday morning that is slated to go by Cabo San Lucas on Monday and more wind and rain will be coming with the storm. By Tuesday, the hurricane will be on the same latitude as Cabo and downgraded to a category 1 and by Tuesday, it is projected to be a tropical depression and well out of the area. Winds are again projected to be 96-110 mph. Some info reflects a weakening back to a tropical depression and others continue reflecting the category 2 hurricane status as of Thursday afternoon. Assumably, the Port of Cabo San Lucas will be closed on Saturday and Sunday and could go out through Monday, depending on how fast Odile moves through the area. Right now, it's a very slow moving storm. It's going to be a wait & see event that unfolds as the storm moves closer and allows for better tracking.
Sea Conditions: With the departure of Hurricane Marie, the ocean calmed and the boats fished most of the week, thru Saturday, unmolested by inclement weather conditions. Surface winds were light & variable until Sunday and then back to the inclement weather and Hurricane Odile, slated to land about 11PM on Sunday evening. Water temps on the Pacific side from the Finger Bank to Cristobal were at 82-83. Cristobal to Cabo, including an areas 10 miles west of Jaime Bank and easterly to the 95 Fathom Spot, was a cold water upwelling at 78-79. From the 9f to the Gorda Banks holding at about 82 and the 1000 fathom curve & outside stable at 85-86 degrees.
Best fishing area: El Cerro Del Golden, (between the Golden Gate Bank and the beach) and Cabo Falso drop-off.
Best Lure/Bait: Stripers were taken on both, artificials and live bait.
Live Bait Supply: Remained readily available for the fleet boats that fished at the $3.00 per bait rate.
